BEING DEAD NIGHTVISION

Texas duo Being Dead offer up ‘Nightvision’, the newest single from forthcoming sophomore album EELS. Formed of best friends Falcoln Bitch and Shmoofy, the eclectic outfit introduced their colourful storytelling abilities with their 2023 full-length debut When Horses Would Run. A strong start, the record established Being Dead’s flair for unconventional arrangements and imaginative soundscapes. With EELS taking a darker direction, ’Nightvision’ is like a shadowy sister of the sunlit ‘Daydream’ from When Horses Would Run. The track begins with a softly spoken verse, melodic sighs and a light, unassuming guitar accompaniment. It feels like you’re in la la land, until the groggy strums gain more pace with a steady beating kick and Falcoln Bitch broods, 'Glad I’m awake now.' There’s a trade-off between vibrant psychedelia and a sobering, deprecating directness that’s grounded in reality. Reaching the chorus, the nature of that contrast is questioned: 'Where’s my memory?/Where’s my caught in a vision with my baby?/ Caught in a dream with just my baby?/ And the vision is true/ And the vision’s untrue too/ It’s got a lot to do with my bitter point of view.' Following a slightly unusual structure, the song wraps up abruptly. It’s almost as though you’ve been snapped back into the real world. Whether you’re a daydreamer or you find yourself being plagued by night visions, Being Dead has something to offer. If one track wasn’t enough, EELS will be released on 27th September via Bayonet Records. -Kayla Sandiford
